Daily News to A-Rod : Congrats on tainted 600

My family subscribes for home delivery of the NY Daily News, so today when I went outside to get the paper I was upset with the headline on the back page. You can read the headline yourself with the picture posted and judge if you feel it was fair or not.

I understand that many are going to call A-Rod's milestone homers tainted for his use of performance enhancing drugs that he admitted to using in 2001-2003. I would expect this headline in Boston or any other city but not in New York. The Daily News loves to call it's self the home town paper but on this one its not supporting the home team in anyway.

Alex Rodriguez finally joins 600 home run club

It took Alex 12 games and 46 at bats but three years after he hit home run 500 against the Royals, A-Rod hit 600 against the Blue Jays. On a warm Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx the milestone homer was finally hit in the first inning of the Yanks 5-1 victory over the Jays.

A-Rod became the youngest player to ever reach the milestone and at 35, with 7 years left on his contract he is sure to be the youngest to hit many other milestones.

During the 12 games that it took Rodriguez to hit the ball out of the yard, the Yanks fell out of first place and many began to wonder if the circus surrounding 600 had become a distraction. Well it has yet to be determined if it spur the Yanks to play better now that they wont be distracted by A-Rod's quest.

Unlike in 2007 when A-Rod hit 500, their wont be any question as to what will happen with the baseball. All the baseballs had been specially marked since he hit 599, so that if the ball landed in the stands, it would be known that the ball would be the authentic one Alex had hit out. But when A-Rod got up in the bottom of the first inning and hit 600, nobody had to worry about if the ball was authentic since the ball landed in monument park, an area that A-Rod will also land. The ball was retrieved by a security guard who gave it back to Rodriguez for nothing but a signed bat. When A-Rod hit his 500th homer it sold for $103,579, it was unsure if the 600 ball would have gone for more or less. It could have gone for more since 600 homers is even harder then 500. But could have been less since A-Rod has since acknowledged using performance enhancing drugs.
Now that 600 is over with the next milestone will be passing Sammy Sosa (609) on the all time list. At the pace the A-Rod is going he may not get it this season. In a press conference after the game reporters asked where this experience ranked in his baseball career, Alex said is was below winning the World Series.

Yankee Stadium Experience: Yankees vs Blue Jays August 2nd 2010

Note : Sorry for the poor picture quality, these came from my cell phone. My camera is having trouble loading the pictures from that game.

As a student when I plan to attend a ball game, I end up sitting in either the grandstand or bleachers. My ticket plan is in the bleachers since that's almost all I can afford, but i love the view and coverage from the elements in the grandstand. On this trip I was sitting on the field level, as a birthday gift from my parents.

I left my house later then usual and was afraid of the traffic, but their was no traffic up until the RFK bridge when a bit of congestion at the toll booth delayed the trip, but we were still making good timing.

I made it into the stadium at around 6:40pm, too late for batting practice but still enough time to grab something to eat before the first pitch. I still haven't tried the Lobel steak sandwich and figured on my birthday was the best time to try it. I headed from the right field side of field level to the left field side to the Lobels stand. About two sections away I saw a random line in the middle of the concourse. I continued to walk towards the stand an I realized that it was the line for Lobels. The line was two sections long ! I understand that it is suppose to be amazing but I was not about to waste two or three innings on the line.

I headed back to my seats in right field, but stopped at section 116 for food. The highlander concession stand there had sliders and fries. Now most of the concessions at the new Yankee Stadium had high expectations and had fallen short for many. For myself when it comes to the concessions I feel they are grossly overpriced and the food isn't that great. But aside from the griping the sliders and fries might be the best deal in the stadium. You get three sliders (Buffalo chicken, beef or fried chicken your choice) and Nathans fries for $12, a steal by Yankee Stadium standards !

While I was on the line I saw a guy in dress pants and a cashmere sweater, I understand I was on field level but who would really wear that to a Yankee game? Even if your coming from work, that is something that has bothered me more and more about the new Yankee Stadium.

Anyways I finally made it back to my seat in section 110, row 29 (seats 13-15 my family was in) right in time for the national anthem. I finally sit down after all the wondering around on field level and I realized the seats we were in were obstructed ! It never said it at all on the tickets, that were ordered from Ticketmaster the first day Yanks tickets had gone on sale to the public. The section to my left (section 111) had a handicap section behind the seats. When I would look towards home plate I couldn't see the batter, all I could see was the pitcher. My mother was furious and went to complain. After an inning she came back angry and was told by the Yankees ticket office that they couldn't do anything.

The obstruction was so bad, and I was not about to sit through the entire game missing the batter especially since the face value on these seats were $90. So I made my way to the Yankees ticket office, I made sure to take picture of the obstruction. In the great hall their was no line so I talked to a guy at the ticket window who was surprisingly kind. At first he seemed skeptical that the seats were obstructed, but then I showed him the picture on my phone. He headed into the back to talk to a supervisor and when he came back he brought out new tickets in section 117A free of charge. So for all the bad press that the Yanks get about the raised ticket prices, the obstructed views and general un-fan friendliness they did get something right by switching my seats.

Section 117A has a pretty sweet view, right behind the Yanks dugout so I was able to get some real nice shots. The other cool thing is that in field level there is waiter service so you can order food and not miss any of the game. I ordered a Brother Jimmy's pulled pork sandwich that came pretty quick. The sandwich was really good and I would get it again in the future even with the $12 price tag.

The game itself was entertaining and frustrating. The Yanks had a 1 run lead until A.J Burnett imploded and gave up a record setting six doubles in the fifth inning. The Yanks attempted a come back but it fell short, Nick Swisher did hit a pair of home runs and Lance Berkman had his first RBI as a Yankee. The other upside was that Sergio Mitre,David Robertson, Boone Logan and Joba Chamberlain all pitched  scoreless innings.

A-Rod didn't hit 600, it should be noted that each time Alex was up most of the stadium was standing while section 117A and most of field level were still sitting. In fact at times it felt strange that I was one of the few fans to really stand up and cheer during certain events during the game. But I guess that is since they usually keep those types of fans out with the $300 price tag. A-Rod didn't get a hit in five at bats, striking out twice and grounding out the other times.

The final score of the game was Blue Jays 8 Yankees 6. Nick Swisher homered twice and almost had a third but it was a long fly to the wall. Following the game, while in my car I saw Nick Swisher in the car next to me. I yelled out to Swish and he nodded over and waved, he also stopped a few times to sign autographs for fans. What can you say bad about Swisher? Nothing he plays great and is great with the fans.

The field level experience at the new Yankee Stadium may not be worth the money if you actually have to pay $300 or you get with obstructed view seats (Don't ever buy section 110, row 29 , seats 13-15). But the view on field level in the infield is great, the option to order food from your seat although a limited menu is also a great way not to miss a pitch and the plush cushioned seats are comfortable.

My next game is August 9th in the bleachers against the Boston Red Sox, so expect a post with what was going on in the stands.

Yanks Quick Hits Upcoming homestand

The Yankees return home tonight to face the Blue Jays and A-Rod still hasn't hit 600 and the race in the AL East got alot closer. The Yanks lost two out of three in Tampa, so their lead in the east is down to one game. The Yanks face the Toronto and Boston and look to increase their edge in the standings over the Rays.

  • Tonight A.J Burnett will face his old team, at the stadium. In Burnett's last two starts he hasn't allowed a run while picking up two victories.
  • Against Burnett tonight is Brendan Morrow. This season Morrow  hasn't picked up a decision against the Yankees but has an ERA of 4.15,while striking out 15 batters in 13 innings.
  • When the Yanks left home, a week ago many figured that Alex Rodriguez would have hit 600 already. That hasn't been the case and much has been made about his struggles since hitting 599. On the road Alex was sure to hear boo's but with this seven game home stand he has a chance to do it at home and end all the talk and debate about it.
  • After the Jays leave town the Yanks welcome in the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are 6.5 games out of the AL East and 5.5 out in the wild card. This weekend in the Bronx is a big series for them, they can pick up some games on the Yanks or lose even more ground. If the Yanks beat up on the Sox this weekend, it would be a huge up hill climb for Boston.
  • The Newest Yankees made their debut's this past weekend. Kerry Wood will wear # 39 , Austin Kearns will wear # 26 and Lance Berkman will wear # 17
  • Andy Pettitte will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday or Wednesday. If all goes well, Pettitte will throw a few more sessions and then have a rehab start.
  • Alfredo Aceves was transferred to the 60 day DL, but is expected to begin throw to live hitters in a few weeks.
  • Joba Chamberlain has pitched to an ERA of 6.17 in July
  • Jeter is hitting .333 in day games, but only .238 in night games
  • Since coming back from the DL in early July, Marcus Thames has only gotten 18 at bats, but has gotten six hits (.333) 1 HR and 4 RBI

No Home Homer from A-Rod

On Thursday night Alex Rodriguez made himself one step closer to historic home run 600, by hitting 599. The entire weekend fans were waiting for 600 to land in the Bronx, but those fans will have to wait until when ? Well nobody is sure but if it is going to land in the Bronx, it will have to wait until August 2nd. The Yankees will be on the road in Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

It is completely possible that Alex won't hit another home run this week and it can happen in August when the Yankees return home against the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox. Of course I don't have the power to choose when he hits the historic bomb, but I would love for it to be the first game back at the stadium or a game against the Red Sox.

It could happen as soon as Monday night in Cleveland, but any where it happens outside of the Bronx will ruin the moment for A-Rod. In Cleveland the fans are going to boo if the milestone homer is hit there along with possibly a few steroids chants. The same could happen in Tampa. although Tampa has been known to house alot of Yankee fans. But if Alex wants to soak in the moment, it has to be done in New York.

A-Rod countdown to 600 : Career Homer 595

With the Yankees tied at 2-2 with the Mariners in the Eight inning Alex Rodriguez connected for a go ahead home that would give the Yankees a 4-2 win. Making A-Rod five homers away from 600. One thing that the Al pal may remember about this homer is that he though it was a walk off. "I thought I hit a much bigger home run than I actually hit,'' Rodriguez said. "I looked over at A.J. [Burnett] and [Andy] Pettitte in the dugout and they weren't moving. That's when I kinda started to figure we had one more half-inning to play. It was pretty embarrassing.''
