Talkin Baseball: The Hot Corner 5-3-11 Podcast

Jered Weaver was a beast in April.
The school year might be coming to a close at C.W. Post, but that doesn't mean that Talkin Baseball ends! With April ending the guys broke down the month of April, giving their thoughts on who were the biggest surprises with the stick and who impressed us with their arm. We also discussed what teams surprised us and what teams have disappointed us along with the most disappointing hitters and pitchers of the month.

Although we spent alot of time recapping the months we also talked about the Yankees and the Mets. Mentioning the Yankees pitching surprising us all, especially Bartolo Colon and Derek Jeter's struggles. On the Mets side we talked about the injury to their top prospect Jenrry Mejia and also discussed if MLB should have stopped the game Sunday night after Osama Bin Laden was killed.

As always we also picked out best and worst of the week, while I annoyed Joe by playing some Soulja Boy. So tune in and listen. To catch us live tune in each Tuesday from 7-9 pm EST on WCWP.org.

(This edition was so packed with baseball that we had to break it up into two podcasts, so once your done with the first, just click the tab bar and enjoy the second part).

This weeks Yankee notes

Are you sure he's only 37?
Yes it has been a while, in fact its been too long. Anyway here is a run down of some things that don't really deserve their own post.

  • It could it be time for Bartolo Colon to stick in the starting rotation. Yes I will admit I was against the Yankees even giving him a legitimate shot, but with the way he has pitched it is tough to deny him the chance. I'm talking about him taking Ivan Nova's spot once Hughes comes back. Nova has yet to impress me, and is very frustrating to watch. The kid walks way to many guys and struggles his third go round in the batting order, I rather see him go down and work on some more pitches while the Yanks try and ride of Colon and hope he stays healthy.
  • Brett Gardner needs to have a long sit down with Kevin Long. Girardi should think of sitting him for a few days to clear his mind and then hope that a few lessons with Long pay off. Gardner is hitting just .128 this season, and although last season was one of the better left fielders, his arm is awful. I don't think it's time to send him down, but he has killed the Yanks so far.
  • This one is at Girardi but can Eduardo Nunez get in a game? And pinch running doesn't count. This is a young player that was ranked as one of the top 10 prospects in the Yankees system, and was rumored in trade talks this past winter. Sitting on the bench in the big league is not going to help his progress as a player and possible trade bait. If they were gonna do this, they should have gave Ramiro Pena the job.
  • Lastly check out my classmates video about the love of baseball from a Yankees perspective.

The suprises of spring training

Well this the last week the Yankees will be down in Tampa training until 2012. On of my favorite things is how the storylines are resolved and the unexpected, becomes a reality.

First example, Gustavo Molina as the back up catcher.
A few weeks back on Talkin Baseball: The Hot Corner I joked the Molina would make the team over Jesus Montero or Austin Romine. Well each day it looks more and more like a solid possability. Molina has had a nice spring, while Montero has struggled and would not get the chance to play everyday in the bigs. Romine missed time, and many feel he is also not ready. I would have said Jorge Posada, but he has yet to catch a single inning in spring training and I doubt he will for the remaining few days. So that leaves it to Molina.

I actually like the Molina idea since, he will just play once a week if that, and when Cervelli comes back they can cut Cervelli they can either send down Molina or Cervelli.

Bartolo Colon, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia all make the team, with the last two being the fourth and fifth starters.
Yes two of them would have to make the team as the starting pitchers at the back of the rotation, unless the Yanks were going to go with four man rotation. But Sergio Mitre was sadly cut as the long man, and that opened up the role for big Bartolo.

I never expected Colon to be on the roster once opening day hit, I also had my doubts about Nova (I was assuming the Yanks would make a trade) but they both will be pitching in the bigs to start 2011.

Eric Chavez does not get hurt! And makes the team

Whats more shocking that he didnt get hurt or that he made the team? I would say that he was healthy enough, cause I had a feeling Girardi would add him to the roster if he played well, and he has done just that hitting close to .400 this spring.

Kevin "the clown" Millwood turns down minor league deal

Millwood looking hefty, with him
CC and Colon the Yankees
could hold a biggest loser contest.
Kevin Millwood was 4-16 last season, had an ERA of over 5 and yet turned down the Yankees minor league deal. The deal similar to the one Freddy Garcia signed, that would include up to $3 million in bonuses.

Why in the world Millwood would turn down this type of deal, I have no clue. Every teams pitchers and catchers have reported, yet Millwood still is holding out for a guarranteed deal. Sure Millwood is an innings eater, and earlier this spring I was hoping the Yanks would give he a shot, but not in a guarranteed way. Millwood over the last few seasons has had an ERA over 5 in four of the past five seasons, and in the past two seasons he had given up 56 homers, a number that wouldnt be going down at Yankee Stadium

Millwood should have just taken the minor league deal, with the state of the Yankees pitching he could have easily won the spot over fat boy Bartolo, Sergio Mitre and Freddy Garcia.
